WCYR was founded in 1977 by two women who saw a need in their community and wanted to make a difference. With no support or resources other than their car, these women began helping mothers exit abusive relationships and find meaningful employment, all still only from their vehicle! 45 years later, we are proud to say we continue the spirit of this mission by offering free wraparound support and programs for women in our community.
Annually, WCYR provides tangible supports to help women experiencing violence and poverty, the items they need to survive the winter months, as well as a bit extra to celebrate the holidays with their children. This year, as we continue on the road to recovery from COVID-19, it will be extremely difficult for women experiencing violence and facing barriers such as unemployment and poverty.
Women's Centre of York Region started the #HelpKeepHerSafe Campaign at the onset of COVID-19 when intimate partner violence (IPV) skyrocketed. The campaign allowed us to pivot online and continue to provide free services despite the loss of funding. The ongoing purpose of the campaign is to meet the needs of women in the community experiencing violence or living in poverty as the needs emerge.
